Betting 101

Barbados Turf Club Betting BookGo to any pari-mutuel window and follow these three easy steps:

 

 

 

  1. State the DOLLAR AMOUNT of your wager (bet). There is a minimum of $1 on all transactions.
  2. Tell the pari-mutuel operator the TYPE OF WAGER you wish to make (win, place, forecast, trifecta, Superfecta, Hi-5, Pick-4 and Daily Double)
  3. State the RACE NUMBER of the horse or horses, on which you wish to bet (it is recommended that you do not to use the horses’ name).

Example:

“I’d like to bet $1 to win on number 4.”

“Please give me a $1 forecast, numbers 7 and 3.”

Remember to check your tickets and count your money before leaving the window, and always keep your tickets until the race is declared OFFICIAL.

Then, if you are a winner, go to any pari-mutuel window and collect your winnings!

Type of Wagers

Win

– When you bet a horse to win, you win if your horse finishes first.

Place

– When you bet a horse to place, you win if your horse finishes first, second or third. In races with five, six and seven starters, payout is on first and second only. No place betting if less than five starters.

Forecast

– To win a forecast bet, you must choose the two horses finishing first and second in the exact order.

Trifecta

– You must choose the first three finishers in their exact order.

Superfecta

– You must choose the first four finishers in their exact order.

HI-5

– you must choose the first five finishers in the exact order.

Pick 4

– You must choose the winner of 4 selected races. Wagers must be placed before the first of the 4 races. If no one picks 4 of 4 winners, the pool is carried over to the next Race Day.

Daily Double

– This wager requires you to pick the winners of two consecutive races as designated by the Barbados Turf Club.

BARBADOS TURF CLUB (BTC) PICK - 4 WAGER

Conditions for BTC Pick-4 minimum pool guarantee:

 

    1. The BTC Pick-4 is only available to customers placing wagers at the Garrison Savannah Racetrack.

 

  • The minimum base amount for a BTC Pick-4 wager is $1.00.

 

 

  • The BTC reserves the right to withhold, on a reasonable basis, any payment due to a potential winner until it is satisfied that all the conditions are met.

 

 

  • In the event that there are no tickets sold selecting all 4-out-of-4 winners, the pool will be accumulated and carried over to the next Pick – 4 game.

 

 

  • (i) In the event of a horse selected on any ticket for any of the Pick- 4 races not coming under Starter’s Orders, then the horse which comes under Starter’s Orders and carries the most units in the win pool on the pari-mutuel at the track shall be substituted for the horse nominated who did not come under Starter’s Orders.(ii) If the horse as described in (i) is already nominated on the ticket then the horse which comes under Starter’s Orders and carries the second most units in the win pool on the pari-mutuel at the track will be substituted for the horse nominated who did not come under Starter’s Orders and so on, until a horse has been substituted for the horse nominated who did not come under Starters Orders.(iii) In the event of two or more horses which have come under Starter’s Orders carrying the same number of units in such pool, this substitution will be made on the one with the lowest post position number allotted to it.

 

 

  • To qualify you must be of a legal age to place a horse racing wager in Barbados.

 

 

  • Official race results and order of finish shall be determined by the BTC’s Rules and Regulations as they apply to thoroughbred races conducted at the Garrison Savannah.

 

 

  • Failure to follow all the Rules as outlined above, will forfeit all rights to any winner(s) of the BTC’s Pick-4 wager.

 

 

  • The BTC is solely responsible for this promotion and it reserves the right to cancel or modify it at its own discretion.

 

BARBADOS TURF CLUB (BTC) SUPERFECTA WAGER

Conditions for BTC Superfecta Wager

 

    1. The BTC Superfecta is only available to customers placing wagers at the Garrison Savannah Racetrack.

 

    1. The minimum base amount for a BTC Superfecta wager is $1.00.

 

    1. The BTC reserves the right to withhold, on a reasonable basis, any payment due to a potential winner until it is satisfied that all the conditions are met.

 

    1. In the event that there is no winning superfecta ticket (s) sold, the pool will be accumulated and carried over to the next specified Superfecta Race on the day provided that a minimum of 12 horses were declared to start at the final stage of declaration. If they are no remaining Superfecta Races with twelve (12) declared starters, the pool will be carried over to a Superfecta Race on the next raceday.

 

    1. To qualify you must be of a legal age to place a horse racing wager in Barbados.

 

    1. Official race results and order of finish shall be determined by the BTC’s Rules and Regulations as they apply to thoroughbred races conducted at the Garrison Savannah.

 

    1. Failure to follow all the Rules as outlined above, will forfeit all rights to any winner(s) of the BTC’s Superfecta wager.

 

  1. The Barbados Turf Club reserves the right to cancel any Superfecta Wager once the race has less than twelve (12) declared starters.

Glossary

GLOSSARY OF RACING TERMINOLOGY

Age

– all race horses in the northern hemisphere arbitrarily celebrate their birthday on January 1st.

Backstretch

– the straightway of the track away from the grandstand.

Colour of horses

– colour designations in horses: Bay – brownish body coat with black points; Black – black with no brown or tan patches; Dark bay or brown – brown coat with areas of tan; Chestnut – a reddish brown colour varying from a dark liver colour to copper-gold, Gray or roan – a combination of white hairs with any one or several of the above-noted colours.

Colours

– the shirt or “silks” worn by the jockeys. Each distinctive design represents a different owner or stable.

Colt

– a male horse, four years old or younger.

Derby

– stakes race for three year olds.

Distaff

– a race for female horses.

Eachway

– a bet made on one horse to win and place.

Fast

– the preferred rating for the racing surface; at its best, it is dry, firm and even.

Filly

– a female horse, four years old or younger.

Furlong

– a distance measuring one-eight of a mile or 200 metres.

Gelding

– a male horse of any age that has had both testicles removed.

Good

– a track surface that is still drying out, but is almost “fast”.

Horse

– in racing, a horse is narrowly defined as any male horse five years or older with genitalia intact.

Inquiry or objection

– is a claim of foul lodged by a racing official, jockey, trainer or owner.

Juvenile

– two-year-old horse.

Length

– measure of distance based on average length of a horse.

Mare

– a female horse, five-years or older.

Maiden

– a horse which has not won a race.

Pari-mutuels

– a betting system whereby bettors collect on the total money wagered after deduction of the house percentage.

Ridgling or rig

– a male horse of any age with either one or two undescended testicles.

Scratched

– a horse that has been withdrawn from a race.

Sprint

– in thoroughbred racing, any distance one mile or less.

Rules & Regulations of Betting

The Barbados Turf Club Rules of Betting

All purchasers of tickets agree to be bound by the Rules of Racing and the other Rules and Regulations of the Barbados Turf Club and by the decisions of the Stewards which are final and binding.

It is the responsibility of the public to ensure that they receive the numbers that they have called for at the Betting Window.

No claim of incorrect bet will be entertained after betting is closed on any race.

The Club shall pay only on presentation of tickets and no claim will be entertained for lost tickets. No payment will be made on torn, altered, or disfigured tickets.
