ELEVEN horses will vie against each other on April 2, when the Michael Parravicino Memorial Hopeful Breeders’ Stakes & Trophy (GR.11 RB.-BAR) runs off at the Garrison Savannah during the Realtors Limited Race day.
The details of the race were disclosed yesterday during a media briefing at the Incitatus Members Lounge at the Garrison Savannah. C.N. ‘Nick’ Parravicino said that despite the recent passing of his wife, it still gave him great pleasure to sponsor the race for another year.
“Looking at the entries it certainly looks like a very nice race, a lot of horses in the race have won a lot of races before and I just hope that the weather is good and we have a good day and may the best horse win. Providing I am still around and Roger [Parravicino] is there and Bruce [Parravicino] is there, Realtors doesn’t intend to go anywhere in a hurry. I would continue to do it once I haven’t run out of money,” said Parravicino.
Acting President of the Barbados Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Richard Edwards commended Realtors for this continued support of the race day.
“It is very kind to you and your company to still support racing at this level. We cannot do without sponsorship. As you know it is very difficult at this time, we are in a recession and people are a bit hesitant in sponsoring races,” said Edwards.
Of the entries in the race, Edwards noted that four of the horses already have impressive winnings, but he singled out the Lord Michael Taylor owned Istanbul as the one to beat in the race.
“Of the other seven horses, four are winners and three are maidens, but you know a maiden can cause an upset, but that is generally not likely in this type of race that we are going. If we have a good track I still think that Istanbul would be very hard to beat. I think that he is the horse that everybody has to run to beat,” said Edwards.
Overall, the purse stands at $62 776, of which the winner will receive $34 536. The second place horse will receive $13 183, third $8 789 and fourth $6 278.
Rawle Batson, past President of the BTBA noted that the race has been going on since 1987 with a break in the years 1996-1999. Some of the past winners include champion horses such as Coo-Bird, Kabul, Apostle and Areutalkintome.
“Realtors Limited came on board twelve years ago, the first of those twelve years it was the Realtors Limited race and after that, Michael, who was the son of Nick, passed away and the race was named the Michael Parravicino Race to memorialise the good work that he had done,” said Batson.
