A tribute to Honourable David Thompson, Prime Minister of Barbados October 2010
On behalf of the Directors, Staff and members of the Barbados Turf Club I wish to offer sincere condolences to the family of Prime Minister Thompson on his untimely death.
Prime Minister Thompson was a true friend of Horse Racing in Barbados. Indeed his decision in his capacity as Minister of Finance made in November 2008 to write off the enormous debt due by the Club to Government not only saved the Club from pending closure but ensured as well that the more than 3000 persons employed in the Racing Industry did not lose their jobs.
On a personal note, it was the then Minister Thompson, as Minister of Finance in 1993 who created a Rum Tax Rebate system which paved the way for my Company to enter the Rum Expo markets of the world and which in turn led to the establishment of the Foursquare Rum Distillery in 1996. My Company will forever be grateful to this man of vision whose humble, down to earth manner put everyone he met at ease irrespective of their status in life. He was indeed the Prime Minister of all of the citizens of this Country.
He has left a legacy of leadership that should be embraced by all who follow him.
On behalf of my wife and family, I extend to his wife, Mara, his daughters, his parents and his siblings our heartfelt sympathy.
May he rest in peace.
Sir David Seale President
