Husbands wins five at Woodbine | Sun, August 21, 2011

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Patrick Husbands continued his impressive vein of winning form with a five-timer that included one of the feature events in yesterday’s 10-race card at the Woodbine Racetrack.

The ace Barbadian reinsman now has 111 wins for the season – and is 17 adrift of current leader Luis Contreras with the season set to finish on December 4 this year.

Husbands claimed his 16th stakes victory for the year in North America, steering the 7-5 favourite Stars to Shine to an convincing 3 ¾-length victory over Ariana D, under Omar Moreno, in the CAN $100 000 Belle Mahone Stakes in the sixth race.

Stars to Shine, a four-year-old, dark bay colt, completed her first career stakes win in one minute, 43.77 seconds for a 1 700-metre trip around the Polytrack.

Husbands put Stars to Shine to stalk the early pacesetter, and close four-wide on the far turn – but his mount was full of run around the final turn.

He put her to challenge near the quarter pole, and took command at the top of the stretch before widening the lead under a steady drive to the wire.

Husbands had opened the programme with a half-length victory on the odds-on favourite Dancin David – owned by renowned Barbadian businessman and racehorse owner Sir David Seale – in the CAN $37 200 first race over 1 200m.

He followed with another half-length victory on the 4-5 favourite Blue Heart in the CAN $67 100 second race, going 1 200m.

Husbands further stamped his authority with a 3 ¼-length victory on the 2-1 favourite Sports Select in the CAN $74 800 third race over 1 200m.

Compatriot Slade Callaghan did well to hold him off with a two-length victory on the 66-5 outsider Truly Amazing in the CAN $39 100 fifth race, going 1 200m.

But Husbands returned to win the Belle Mahone, and added a three-length victory on the 1-1 favourite Dr. Funkenstein in the CAN $30 500 penultimate race over 1 400m. (CMC)
